The Marathon that turned into A 100 Yd Dash

You ever have one of those dinner parties? No, not one of those parties. One of THOSE parties. The guests slowly begin to arrive and before you know it, you have a select group huddled together that rivals the Continental Congress. These people here are smart and they mean business and they’re not leaving until they’re ready. We had the fuel and the coal and the gas. This was going to be a barn burner.

This marathon of a dinner party had all the usual hallmarks of a successful one. Non-smokers smoking. Baby sitters getting the OT call. Neighbors stopping by for a 1 am night cap. LA is a friendly place if it’s late enough. Friendly enough that I even turned over my one household duty, music, to  MC Luke MC. Granted it was late, but he came up with a gem that I’ll share.  You’ll want to once you take it out for a spin.

This is the story  of the marathon dinner party that turned into A 100 Yd Dash by RAPHAEL SAADIQ- A song that at once humbles you for thinking “if this song has been around so long, where have I been?” and at the same time gives joy and hope at knowing there’s so much to be discovered. Like this sneak peak from the factory floor and soon to be released F+G Blazer… And if you’re ever in this jacket, you will be rocking the 100 YD Dash and others from your ipod in it’s new home…our ipod pocket. (the photo quality is grainy, we know. our factory is so top secret that even we can’t take photos there. this was taken surreptitiously from a pen camera)

Songs from the Underbelly

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Is anyone else watching the Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities on Direct TV? (nothing against you cable watchers, of course) The short version is that it’s Australia’s version of the Wire- a composite look at drugs and crime, and criminals and police. It certainly stands on its own two legs as a strong crime drama- 70s stylized to the hilt, compelling characters, beautifully shot, great dialogue, etc. And, like the Wire (though we’d never really dare to compare)…it’s based on true stories….

(check the  patterned shirt. if you asked ‘which one?’, you know it’s the 70s in Australia)

The real sets-it-apart detail to the series, however, is the music. There’s an original song that rocks, but the gems are what are playing underneath throughout. I’ve searched high and low on the triple dub to find a definitive list, but all that exists is a soundtrack that’s a collection of some of the tunes, and a rather half-hearted attempt by Australia’s Channel 9 to offer more guidance per episode. So?

1

So, I’ve spent more time than I should have over the last week playing, rewinding, and playing again scenes to try and make out the words of songs. I’m not kidding. Then based on the words i can make out…yep, the google.  I’m on a mission, and that mission is to share….so here we go…Let me know what you think, as there are plenty more.

Introducing the F+G music player

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

To all those who were kind enough to write in and request we post music in some form, we’re proud to announce the Franklin + Gower player. Comments are welcome. Each week we’ll try to post one or two tunes that are in our current playlist for one reason or another. Enjoy.

1

We’re assuming by now you’ve heard of the mash-up. The concept seems straightforward enough. Beat matches beat to form a unique take on two songs. The DJ has put their own spin (sorry) on things. Anyone see where this is going?

1

Yep, we view our pants and shorts as a mash-up.  One takes a fabric and matches it to another to create their own pair which in turn tells the world a little about the wearer.

1

And like a mash-up, Franklin + Gower  can make people dance and have a good time. And like our pants, you can’t find these mash ups on itunes….at least the one’s we’ll be posting. Each week, we promise fresh track updates
