F+G hits IBIZA and IBIZA hits back

There’s not much room for arguing that Ibiza is hands down the place to be for all things with a beat. Music and beats permeate the island- morning, noon, night, and morning again. F+G spent 4 days (an eternity in real time) there recently and came back with this gem. It’s not new to the world, but it’s new to me. Like a fine wine, give this one time…..

Every once in a while we are all dealt a moment of clarity. Sometimes it comes in the form of that light bulb going off while standing on a crowded subway platform. Other times, the meditative to and fro of the ocean proves catalyst. Today? You Tube.

It all started off, as it often does, by catching up on my go to source for all things with soul- soul-sides.com. DJ Odub (the o is for oliver, but really is for omniscient) introduced Junior Parker’s version of the Beatles’ “Taxman”(see below).  I travel to the You Tubes and the lightning strikes.

The Junior Parker leads to the Cypress Hill which has always been part of Rita Marley. You feel me?  Covers and Samples and Groove, Oh My!

Songs from the Underbelly

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Is anyone else watching the Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities on Direct TV? (nothing against you cable watchers, of course) The short version is that it’s Australia’s version of the Wire- a composite look at drugs and crime, and criminals and police. It certainly stands on its own two legs as a strong crime drama- 70s stylized to the hilt, compelling characters, beautifully shot, great dialogue, etc. And, like the Wire (though we’d never really dare to compare)…it’s based on true stories….

(check the  patterned shirt. if you asked ‘which one?’, you know it’s the 70s in Australia)

The real sets-it-apart detail to the series, however, is the music. There’s an original song that rocks, but the gems are what are playing underneath throughout. I’ve searched high and low on the triple dub to find a definitive list, but all that exists is a soundtrack that’s a collection of some of the tunes, and a rather half-hearted attempt by Australia’s Channel 9 to offer more guidance per episode. So?

So, I’ve spent more time than I should have over the last week playing, rewinding, and playing again scenes to try and make out the words of songs. I’m not kidding. Then based on the words i can make out…yep, the google.  I’m on a mission, and that mission is to share….so here we go…Let me know what you think, as there are plenty more.
