1
This is serious stuff, man. 6-11 pm on Friday.  Fashion’s Night Out at Fred Segal Melrose.  F+G is debuts it’s fall line, and exclusively to Ron Robinson, our Women’s Blazer.

1

And for those who like to rockin’ it while shoppin’ it, Fred Segal has put together an appearance by THE DANDY WARHOLS. If you don’t know who they are, that’s a problem…more for you than us. Please visit the song below. And if you really want to know all about them, check out  “DIG!” the documentary which followed the Dandies and the Brian Jonestown Massacre while on tour together. It’s a gem and a trainwreck all in one.

Rubicon- You make me the good kind of dizzy.

If you haven’t caught AMC’s latest slow-mo voyage, it may be a boat that you’ll never catch until the DVD comes out. And when it does, put on your sunglasses people, there’s a lot of onion peeling going on.

1

Fans of conspiracy from the Third Man to All the President’s Men to even Alias should be watching Rubicon. It’s on Sunday nights just before Mad Men. Think before you brood.

1

Here’s why it’s good….it’s well executed. And in a conspiracy, that’s saying something. They dole out just enough nuggets to keep the viewer satisfied without giving away the farm. Lost was always guilty of stringing you along and not paying off, or not on your timeframe. Every little morsel that’s revealed in Rubicon is at once satisfying and at the same time dizzy-making. ‘Wait, what just happened?’ ‘Who was that?” Was that the same guy?”….you get the picture. It’s done well.

1

Here’s why it’s bad…AMC has decided to leave the word “premiere” in the lower third of the screen, thereby confounding the person who begins on episode 3, thinking they have caught the start of things. I started at episode 2, thinking it was episode 1, and thought it was a brilliant play in a conspiracy show to begin the pilot with a “Previously On”. It is, but that’s not what they did here. I’m also a little slow.

1

If you haven’t caught up, wait for the dvd or find someone who has them all recorded (like me) and invite yourself over. (i’m generally busy during the days).

It’s not a barn burner, but you will be on the edge of your seat for some of the time, and scratching your head for the rest of it. Rubicon nails the conspiracy genre. I hope the ratings reflect that because we could all use a lot more smart in the tv.

Summer IS NOT over….turn it up edition!

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Every once in a while, I feel I strike gold…discovering something I’m not sure how I lived without until now. For some, that’s a snuggie of any variety. Others…it’s a breathmint. Me? it’s generally music.

1

I’m often late to the party ( see 100 yd dash post) and way past the past-due date. The below is a summer anthem, at least  I see it that way, for the last stretch of summer. Sometimes we’re surrounded by family, other times by friends, sometimes both. And sometimes, most of the time,  you’re the one stuck at the desk, answering the phones, banging your head against the chair, or just chuting it down the side of an Airbus 320 on your way to Flatbush.

1

This is to be shared or played all by your lonesome, so long as it’s a bit louder than people are used to…and, yes, Mr. Slater, this one’s for you. You gave us such joy that we could only return the favor. If anyone can get this message to him, we have a pair of shorts for his next perp walk- on the house.

JACK AND JILL WENT UP THE HILL….

Monday, August 9th, 2010

…with their pail of water.

.

The bottle of water has long been a ubiquitous accessory here in LA. Hydrating has become cool from coast to coast. First, the very chic designer waters from France and Fiji. Then, the more local, homegrown ones like Poland Spring and Arrowhead. Of course, the very opportunistic ones such as Dasani and Aquafina, came along too. But, while hydrating remains in, polluting is definitely out and there is nothing more out than a branded plastic bottle.

.

The choices for reusable water bottles are endless, much like the number of branded waters. However, F+G heartily endorses KOR. These cool bottles come in four great colors. The colors each represent an aspect of water conservation. Proceeds from the bottles go to supporting given conservation effort. Kor puts the responsible in hydration, not to mention chic. Run don’t walk to get your pail of water at:  www.korwater.com.

A week has passed since the Ibiza extravaganza, and I can’t get the beat out of my head. This is in part because I just downloaded the Ibiza Sonica app . It’s live streaming radio with the music from the hippest radio station. You are now warned that Ibiza will be following you everywhere.

1

In addition to regular programming, they do live broadcasts from various clubs , including  We Love Space Sundays There’s lots more to listen to on the site

Quick update here for the folks that don’t mind scratching that itch. I first caught this Skratch Bastid on Cosmo Baker’s break beat Tuesday’s and have been meaning to share. This guy and the floor look like they’re having the time of their lives. Wonder what the Godfather would have to say?

Just Do It (over)

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

For those of you who read this blog, or even those who just happened to be lucky enough to surf here on this day, you’ll either already know or learn that soul-sides.com is one of the best music blogs out there. This, of course, is just my taste. Not yours. Not his. Not hers. But, i will say, that if you spend some time over there you’ll find music that you’ve never heard and are always humbled by the knowledge O-dub

1

So, it comes as no surprise that i found something on Soul Sides that i’d like to share to our readers, especially those of you in the LA area- Hollywood to be specific.

1

It seems that every sunday from 2-10pm The Do Over goes down on El Centro in the heart of Hollywood. A hodge podge of LA’s who’s who on the tables.

1

Go check it out, LA! and wear a pair of cool shorts while you’re there. A stripe on the side of a short has often been used as a powerful icebreaker. in the meantime, here’s a preview of your next Sunday’s activity.

Official Road Trip Songs for 2010- Part 1

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

1

Ahhh.. summer. The sun, the beach, the 6 hour drive that should have taken two. This will officially serve as the first in a series of road trip music. The theme for today? Leaving town….

Leaving town is sometimes the best part of the entire trip. Gassed up, everyone’s ready to go, on high alert for the fastest route out of dodge. The adrenalin is pumping since you were able to get out early, despite every possible roadblock. Congrats. Here’s the song you need. It does not get groovier.

Adieu, Law and Order!

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

1

If you’re like one of us at F+G, a little piece of you died on the inside this week with Monday’s final CLANG! of Law and Order. One of us is serious.  Ok, we’ll switch to first person.

1

I had a moment when I toggled the DVR to cancel. Why?  I’ve been a fan since I was 21. That’s 18 of the 20  years the show aired. And those 20 years weren’t always pretty (neither mine,l nor theirs), from the revolving door at the ADAs office to the Briscoe corn-ballers at the end of the first act. If you know who Profaci is, you know what I’m talking about. (I can’t really handle of the spin-offs, by the way.)

1

I can explain my addiction, you see, as I used to live in New York City. I loved seeing the my City on tv every week, and later with syndication, every hour. Guessing the neighborhood or block or bar was as vital to me as the ripped (off) from the headlines plots. I could find a little piece familiarity and comfort in every 44 minutes. Seriously. They were at Save the Robots before I was!

1

I live in LA, now. In theory, there should be a ton of that familiarity that I love in a TV show. Even 24 New York was filmed here.  Maybe that says it all. But, really, after 10 years in SoCalDude, I still don’t know the city half as well as I did Manhattan after 1, though I think  the Shield and Baywatch kind of nail it.

I read the numbers weren’t that good for the final episode. This seems to make sense, especially after I read that NBC bungled something again. (Read this, too, if you delight in peacock misery). I watch the reruns more, anyway, so the NBC goodbye wasn’t so brutal. Still, there’s a void. I can feel it.

1

Adieu, Law and Order! 456 episodes tells me I’m not alone in my grief.

1

As does this… of which, I’ll offer only the sneak peak below, entitled BRISCOTHEQUE

If you lost all of your digital music, and you only had digital music, what would be your first purchase?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

1

Say it ain’t so, Danny. Say it ain’t so. As of deadline for this post, it appears that I have lost my external 250GB hard drive that kept most of my music. I have some of it backed up, according to Time Machine, but not as much as I might have thought with a program called Time Machine. There’s still hope, but hope is not a strategy, and I must arrive at some sort of acceptance before the tears from banging my head into a brick wall appear. So here we are….i lost a lot of gems for sure, but on the bright side, there are lots more out there.
1
Which brings me to the metaphysical/philosophical topic of what one does if they lose all of their music, and they use their music as I do- a guide or reflection of mood at any given moment in time. Where do you begin to replace the loss? There are ethics in play. I paid for it all. All of it. I never stole any music. I might be stupid and play by the rules, but I sleep at night. Is it ok to go to the file share corners of the internet to find what I’ve lost?

1

As for where to starte, for me, there’s no right answer, though I’d likely give serious thought to last week’s post regarding the re re release of the re remastered Exile on Main Street. Seems like a great place to start, a strong foundation. It also seems too obvious.

I need some help. All suggestions welcome. Where would you start to rebuild a music library? would you start here? I think i would.
